Properties:

Antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, carminative, expectorant, antispasmodic

Dosage:

1-3 grams daily of dried fruit/pods (typically prepared as an infusion or decoction). (Break for at least 2 weeks after 12 weeks of continuous daily usage).

Benefits:

Supports healthy respiratory function, helps clear congestion, and relieves digestive issues such as gas, bloating, and cramping. Rich in anethole, which gives it powerful antimicrobial and soothing qualities.

Hormonal Benefits:

Contains phytoestrogens that can help gently modulate hormonal balance, support healthy lactation in nursing mothers, and ease smooth muscle spasms associated with menstrual cramping.

Avoid if:

You have a hormone-sensitive condition (such as estrogen-positive breast cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids), estrogen-dependent cancers, or a known allergy to Illicium species. (Note: Always ensure you are using Illicium verum—Chinese star anise—and avoid Illicium anisatum—Japanese star anise, which is highly toxic).

Cautions:

Avoid large therapeutic doses if pregnant. Can occasionally cause allergic reactions or contact dermatitis. In rare cases of adulteration or misuse (such as confusion with toxic Japanese star anise), neurotoxicity, seizures, and severe vomiting can occur.

You should also be cautious if you are taking any of the following:

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), oral contraceptives, or medications broken down by liver enzymes (Cytochrome P450 substrates), as star anise can interact with metabolic pathways and hormone levels.
